The Ancient Chinese

Seismometer

By Yuvraj Khosa
What is it

I liked this background... it has nothing to do with a seismograph

What is it?

A seismometer, or seismograph, is a device that will detect and warn you of a potentials earthquake.

Whom was it

made by?

The seismograph was made by a Chinese astronomer Zhang Heng. He made it in 132A.D during the Han dynasty.

Who made it

What did it

Look like?

The seismometer was made of bronze and looked kind of like an egg. It had 8 dragons pointing their heads in 8 directions. North, South, East, West, North-East, South-west, North-West, South-East. Each had 1 copper ball in its mouth, and below were 8 copper toads with mouths uprising. Everything looked beautiful. And was a piece of art.

Im watching you!

K... Bye

I love space :)

EXPLORE THE UNKNOWN

How di it work?

How did it work?

The seismograph was a fairly simple concept. There was an insanely sensitive pendulum inside the chamber. The pendulum was surrounded by 8 rods that led to a dragon's stomach. When an earthquake hit the sensitive pendulum would move and knock a ball out of the dragon's mouth, and into a toads'. There would always be two balls dropped because an earthquake would knock the pendulum from one side to the other. This way an observer could tell if an earthquake hit, and also from which direction. Believe it or not this ancient piece of technology would tell you if an earthquake hit even from 400 miles away!

How it works.

Extra extra read all about it, Chinese astronomer invented earthquake detector!
Chinese astronomer, Zhang Heng, created world's first earthquake detection device, called the seismometer. This innovation will protect the lives of many, and keep the emperor Han’s subjects safe and sound. This egg looking bronze chamber had 8 dragons pointing in 8 directions, underneath were 8 toads with their mouths raised. When an earthquake hit a pendulum inside the chamber would make a copper ball fall into the toad’s mouth. This way they knew when an earthquake would hit. They will know from even 500 miles away! Later last day, the seismograph reported a reading of an earthquake. However, none occurred. Two days later a messenger arived from a village 500 miles away and reported a huge earthquake. Zhang Heng is awarded scientist of the year. And is given a reward from emperor Han. Zhang made this while keeping in mind, art, science, and astronomy. He created a beautiful piece of art. This seismograph was one of the greatest achievement of 132 AD. Seismometers were strategically placed around a village to exactly tell what will occur. This has saved many lives of people and the astronomer is living a great life. Overall this magnificent piece of technology has changed the world around us. I'm reporter Yuvraj Khosa, OUT!

CONCLUSION!

FACTS
Conclusion

So as you can see, the ancient Chinese are extraordinary inventors, and innovators. The way they thought of these mechanics 2000 years ago is mind blowing to me. Although the actual seismometer was lost during "history" replicas exist around the world. Today you have learnt what a seismometer is, what it does, how this one looks like, how it works, you read a 2000 year old newspaper. Written in english. Thats all bye.
